The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
In this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
