Student Society President-Elect Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.
The vote against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a college in Utah.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.
His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the society in May.
