Steven Gerrard under consideration for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin gets the sack.
The Anfield icon is being strongly considered for a surprise reappointment to the Scottish giants following the official dismissal of manager the former Southampton coach.
His ill-fated spell at Rangers concludes
The coach's unsuccessful period in Glasgow finished with the manager exiting the the away venue via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a share of the points which left the Glasgow side 11 points from the peak of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.
Furious fans had surrounded the Rangers team bus in the away ground, making their feelings clear.
Ibrox directors hesitant to let go of the manager
The Ibrox hierarchy had been reluctant to part with the former Swansea boss, who was only brought in in June, despite loud complaints from fans.
However, there was an understanding that the coach's position had become untenable.
Rangers have won only one of their league fixtures to date, which has been combined with poor performances in Europe.
Overall, the coach won only five of 17 fixtures, with a passive, unclear footballing philosophy that gained little support.
“While all transition periods take a while, results have not met the organization's goals,” said a club announcement on the weekend.
“Number two Gill, and first-team coach Williamson, will also be departing. Martin and his staff have given their all throughout their tenure. We thank them for their work and wish them well for the time ahead.”
Steven Gerrard secured the championship with Rangers
The Liverpool legend secured the championship with the Ibrox side in that campaign, their only championship since 2011.
His achievements in Scotland before then, alongside setbacks at Aston Villa, creates uncertainty about his coaching abilities.
Yet he is highly regarded by the very group of supporters the team are keen to get back on side.
The return of the Anfield legend, who previously worked in the Middle East, would prove hugely popular.
Gerrard will also be mindful of what scarce chances he has to be a manager in top-tier competitions.
The departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell
The coaching change will increase pressure on Thelwell, the Rangers sporting director.
He had been very backing of the coach while publicly revealing a investment of a significant sum in the off-season.
The former boss had agreed to a multi-year agreement.
Martin's earlier positions
The coach, who had formerly managed the Dons and Swansea, managed the Saints to elevation to the top flight in the previous season after being hired the prior offseason.
He was sacked last December after the Southampton secured just a single victory of their first 16 games.
He was appointed Barry Ferguson’s replacement in June, after the caretaker boss had taken over from the sacked the former manager in winter.
