Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was poised to be a candidate among three vying for Ireland's head of state, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, on Sunday evening he said via a statement that he "erred which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've resolved to leave the election for president with immediate effect and go back to my family," he said in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
